With over 7,000 highland cattle registrations the integrity of the Society's herd book is paramount. Entries into the herd book are governed by the Breed Standard and the Registration and Herd Book Rules.

Breed Standard

The NZHCS Breed Standard is adapted from the Highland breed standard published in Scotland by The Highland Cattle Society on 10th June 1885.

The standard describes the desired animal physical characteristics. These are used by members to define their breeding programme and by the Council of Management in defining the required characteristics for entry into the herd book.

Registration and Herd Book Rules

The Registration and Herd Book Rules are developed by, voted on and approved by NZHCS members. They govern the operation of the New Zealand Highland Cattle Society herd book. The NZHCS Constitution authorises the Council of Management to implement policies and procedures that operationalise the rules.
